ILIGAN CITY – Last October 1, 2018, the Geo-SAFER Western Mindanao Project, represented by Engr. Daniel S. Mostrales, Mr. Ruben C. Tudio, Engr. Sheila N. Frias, and Mr. Mark Sanny T. Perfecto, presented the initial findings of the Kauswagan Urban  Drainage Assessment at the Municipal Mayor’s Office, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.

Initial observations and results include the following: a) an evaluation of changes in flood dynamics due to the construction of the new bridge and the perimeter fence of the GNPower Kauswagan, b) an updated detailed flood hazard map that takes into consideration a modified terrain incorporating newly built structures, and c) a graphic and animated flood flow changes showing effects on flood extent, flood depths and temporal changes (flood arrival and duration) before and after presence of structures.

In attendance during the event are Hon. Rommel C. Arnado (Municipal Mayor), Jacob G. Salise (MDRRMO), Dionesio A. Fuentes (MPDC), Saidave Maruhom (MEO), and Ruby Rose D. Nacario (GNPower Kauswagan).

The presentation included the following recommendations or several alternative actions that should be taken: a) to secure and acquire wetlands and easement of rivers and creeks and have these easements beyond the prescribed three (3) meters within built-up areas, b) to improve early flood warning system and/or relocation of settlements that are likely to be affected severely by extreme events, c) construct a flood control dike, and d) review design of bridges considering natural floodways and its effects on our floodplains. A major request of the Hon. Mayor Arnado is to evaluate the effect of dredging the main river (Larapan River) and one of its major tributaries (Mialunod River). This study is needed to support proposed dredging works.
