Geo-SAFER joins Mindanao National Science and Technology Week 2018 Celebration

The Geo-SAFER Mindanao Program took part in the Mindanao-wide celebration of the National Science and Technology Week last July 6-8, 2018 at SMX Convention Center, SM Lanang, Davao City as one of the event’s exhibitors.

Engr. Meriam M. Santillan explained the flood hazard mapping status of Mindanao to President Rodrigo Duterte during his tour at the exhibit area

The program encapsulated its outputs and initiatives by showing a sample flood hazard map, audio-visual presentations about the program and its component projects, a map showing the status of hazard mapping in Mindanao and presenting the web-based near-real time Flood Event Visualization and Damage Estimations (Flood EViDEns) system developed by the Geo-SAFER Agusan Project. President Rodrigo Roa Duterte personally visited the Geo-SAFER Mindanao booth and commended the program for its flood hazard mapping initiatives.

Geo-SAFER Program Leader, Engr. Meriam Makinano-Santillan also conducted a discussion about the Geo-SAFER Mindanao program and it during the scientific forum on Disaster Resilient Communities last July 7, 2018 where she highlighted the importance of flood hazard mapping and geo-informatics and its relevance to the communities especially in disaster preparedness and planning, echoing the Mindanao NSTW 2018 theme: “Science for the People of Mindanao: Innovation for Collective Prosperity”.
