Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur personnel trained on Open-source GIS Application Utilization for Flood Hazard Mapping

The Caraga Center for Geo-Informatics through the Geo-SAFER Agusan Project Local Government Unit personnel from the province of Agusan del Norte and Agusan del Sur for the 2nd Phase of the “Training on the Principles, Utilization and Applications of Geo-SAFER Agusan and Phil-LiDAR 1 Detailed Flood Maps and Applications for Disaster Preparedness and Application” last August 6–8, 2019 for the Agusan del Norte and August 14–16, 2019 for the Agusan del Sur LGUs at Pietros Square, Butuan City.

The second phase of the training is entitled "Introduction to Geographic Information System and its Applications in Flood Hazard Mapping and Analysis Using Free and Open-Source Software", which focuses on the familiarization of Geographic Information System and how its functionalities can be utilized in flood modeling, simulation and hazard mapping.

Some of the topics that were discussed during the training were about the Geographic Information System, Cartography and Spatial Analysis and Hydrologic and Hydraulic Modeling for Flood Hazard Mapping. Various exercises were also given to the participants in order to allow them to execute the processes of each simulation. The participants were able to explore various software that is used for flood hazard mapping.

Geo-SAFER Mindanao conducts Program Culmination

The Geo-SAFER Mindanao Program conducted a culmination activity last June 5, 2019 at the LMX Convention Center, Butuan City. The event gathered all Geo-SAFER Personnel from the five (5) implementing Higher Educational Institution namely; Caraga State University, Central Mindanao University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, MSU – Iligan Institute of Technology, and University of the Philippines Mindanao.

DOST-PAGASA acknowledges weather monitoring, forecasting systems developed by Geo-SAFER

The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Association (DOST-PAGASA) recognized and provided additional inputs to enhance the data, systems and other outputs developed by the Geo-SAFER Mindanao program. The said parties met for a harmonization meeting conducted last May 2, 2019 at the Geo-SAFER Mindanao Office, Caraga State University, Butuan City.

PAGASA Hydro-Meteorology Division personnel headed by Mr. Roy Badilla, Mr. Anthony Joseph Lucero from Mindanao PAGASA Regional Services Division (Mindanao PRSD), and Ma’am Lolita Vinalay of PAGASA Butuan participated in the said harmonization meeting. During the meeting, The Geo-SAFER Agusan project presented its different outputs, including the Mindanao online rainfall and water level monitoring systems. DOST-PAGASA acknowledged the outputs developed by the project and said that it would be useful in conducting weather monitoring activities.
